This mission is achieved through a broad range of activities that include publications, translations, fingering editions, musical products, DVD and CD presentations, networking, symposiums, teacher certification, private and online lessons, web casting, scholarships and grants. Organized and maintained by former students, colleagues, and family members, The Aaron Shearer Foundation is a resource for students, teachers, and performers who currently use or wish to gain insight into Aaron Shearer's revolutionary work.
Aaron Shearer was one of the most widely recognized and respected Classic Guitar teachers in America. When he started the Classic Guitar department at American University it became the first classic guitar program in an American institution of higher learning. Subsequently, he was director of the guitar programs at Catholic University of America, Peabody Conservatory of Music, and the North Carolina School of the Arts. Towards the end of his life he was adjunct professor of Classic Guitar at Duquesne University. Mr. Shearer lectured throughout the United States and Canada, and received numerous citations for his contributions to guitar pedagogy. He also became the first classic guitar teacher to be cited for exceptional leadership and merit by the American String Teachers Association and received an Honorary Doctorate from Duquesne University.
In his lifetime, he published numerous books and articles including a six book method entitled "Classic Guitar Technique" which included two volumes with three supplements and a guitar note speller. This benchmark method was originally published in 1959 by Franco Columbo, which ultimately became part of Warner Brothers and is now printed by Alfred Music with Volume 1 now in its 3rd edition including a CD. In 1992, Mr. Shearer published a three-part book entitled "Learning the Classic Guitar" with Mel Bay Publications. Around the turn of the century, he began to experiment with alternative ways of supporting the guitar while still maintaining muscular alignment and full access to the instrument. His creation of the Shearer Strap has given guitarists freedom from the constraints of the footstool. In the early part of 2008, prior to his passing, He finished his magnum opus "The Shearer Method", a comprehensive treatise that covers his entire approach to teaching and learning the Classic Guitar. This work is detailed with illustrations, examples, and insightful DVD presentations about hand movement and preparation. This work is slated for publishing in late 2011.
Aaron Shearer's body of work was revolutionary and his unwavering commitment to excellence earned him the moniker, "The Wall," by some of his students. The guitar world has referred to him, as "The Father of the American Classic Guitar". The Guitar Foundation of America has called him "the most prominent pedagogue of the twentieth century". His wisdom and insight are sorely missed, but his work and legacy will live on through this foundation and all the lives he has touched.
