Classical Guitar Education

Aaron Shearer Foundation

Considered the “father of American Classical Guitar Education,” Aaron Shearer was instrumental in the development of many celebrated guitar performers and educators of the past decades in the US.  Their level of musical and virtuosic performance has contributed to raising the image of the guitar in the classical music world.  Dedicating his life to the development of guitar pedagogy, Shearer authored three important series of method books and established the first college guitar program in the country.  It is our desire that the foundations of his teachings be shared as widely as possible with those musically inclined devotees who are attracted by the charms and subtleties of the classical guitar.

Organized and maintained by former students, colleagues, and family members, the ASF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining the legacy of Aaron Shearer through excellence in guitar eduction. This is achieved through a broad range of programs and activities including: our annual summer institute, publications, fingering editions, musical products, recordings, networking, symposiums, private and online lessons, scholarships and grants.

In addition to its many programs and activities, the ASF is a go-to resource for classical guitar education.   Explore the Shearer Studio for dozens of lessons and articles on technique, music concepts, free sheet music, and archived articles written by Shearer.  There is also a wealth of educational resources in our online supplement designed to follow The Shearer Method, Books I-V.   The supplement contains a wealth of Shearer articles and is free to use; the online media requires a password (found in the Shearer Method books) and provides video and audio reinforcement of much of the content, as well as skill-building modules for reading and pattern recognition.  Finally, you can also connect to a broader guitar community through the Shearer Community and Classical Guitar Society pages.
