Chord Recognition

Identify three-note fretboard patterns as chord names. Each pattern is part of a larger 4-, 5-, or 6- string chord. The qualities choices are lead-sheet style. (Here "o7" is for all types of diminished 7th chords)

Click in the order: chord letter name, chromatic sign for the letter (if necessary), and chord quality.

Level 10—Twenty notes

Level 6—Dyads on ③, ② & ①

For chromatic dyads, continue to select notes from lowest to highest.
Always click the chromatic sign after clicking the correct note name. For example:

Level 9a—Triads on ③, ② & ①

For triads, select each correct note name in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) middle note, and 3) highest note.

Level 8a—Triads on ④, ③, & ②

For triads, select each correct note name in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) middle note, and 3) highest note.

Level 9b—Triads on ③, ② & ①

For chromatic triads, continue selecting correct notes in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) middle note, and 3) highest note. Always click any chromatic sign after clicking the correct note name. For example:

Level 8b—Triads on ④, ③, & ②

Level 11—Notes on ④, ⑤ & ⑥

Level 7—seventeen notes

Level 5—Eleven Notes

Level 4—Dyads on ② & ①

For dyads, click each correct note name in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) higher note.

Level 3—New notes on ② & ①

Level 2—Dyads on ③ & ②

For dyads, click each correct note name in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) higher note.

C Major uses Scale Form V which involves two squeeze shifts. After the first squeeze, your hand will be in Position X with 4 on C ② and F ①. Both notes are at fret XIII.

When descending, you'll squeeze to Pos. X to play F on ⑥ with 4 at fret XIII.

Review and visualize the scale:

Now practice:

Begin with m,i alternation; when comfortable switch a,m (m,a) alternation.
Maintain legato connection. When descending the scale, strive to have your left-hand fingers in a prepared posture, hovering near the frets before they play.
When secure, practice the scale while vocalizing the note and watching your hands.
Finally, play and say the scale one stroke per note from memory.
