Recording Equipment

Microphone
- Option #1--Use your smart phone for both audio and video.
- Option #2--For better audio, use an external USB mic. These are affordable and require no additional devices to connect directly to your computer.
- Option #3--For best quality, use a condensor mic and audio interface with phantom power.
A basic audio recording app for your computer (e.g., GarageBand). If you don't have one, you can download free audio software, such as Audacity.
For video, you'll need a camera or your smartphone.

Recording Prep

If you're using an external mic:
- Close mic-ing is always best. Aim the mic at the guitar's bridge for a warmer sound, or the neck for a brighter sound.
- Check to make sure that when you play, your signal does not "peak" (distort) on the input meter (keep it between -12 and -8db). For more info on setting recording levels.
Position your smartphone or camera horizontally and set up your picture so that it includes all of you (both hands) in the shot.
Make sure that the smartphone or camera is correctly oriented so the recording does not play upside down (notice in the picture, the correct orientation of the iphone).

Saving your files

If you recorded with just your smartphone, you'll have 1 file.
if you recorded video on your phone and audio on your computer, you must be able to combine/synchronize these into one file (with video or audio editing software), saved in either .mp4 or .mov. format.

Upload your file

Once your file is ready, upload it to Google Drive. If you're new to Google Drive, you can setup a free account with up to 15GB of storage.

When you open My Drive, right click it and select "Upload Files"

After uploading, right click the file and select "Share"

In the Get Link box make sure that "anyone on the Internet with this link can view" is selected, the click "copy link."

Chord Recognition

Identify three-note fretboard patterns as chord names. Each pattern is part of a larger 4-, 5-, or 6- string chord. The qualities choices are lead-sheet style. (Here "o7" is for all types of diminished 7th chords)

Click in the order: chord letter name, chromatic sign for the letter (if necessary), and chord quality.

Level 10—Twenty notes

Level 6—Dyads on ③, ② & ①

For chromatic dyads, continue to select notes from lowest to highest.
Always click the chromatic sign after clicking the correct note name. For example:

Level 9a—Triads on ③, ② & ①

For triads, select each correct note name in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) middle note, and 3) highest note.

Level 8a—Triads on ④, ③, & ②

For triads, select each correct note name in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) middle note, and 3) highest note.

Level 9b—Triads on ③, ② & ①

For chromatic triads, continue selecting correct notes in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) middle note, and 3) highest note. Always click any chromatic sign after clicking the correct note name. For example:

Level 8b—Triads on ④, ③, & ②

Level 11—Notes on ④, ⑤ & ⑥

Level 7—seventeen notes

Level 5—Eleven Notes

Level 4—Dyads on ② & ①

For dyads, click each correct note name in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) higher note.

Level 3—New notes on ② & ①

Level 2—Dyads on ③ & ②

For dyads, click each correct note name in the exact order: 1) lowest note, 2) higher note.
