In order to read and play in Position IV, we must first learn new notes at fret VII which are accessed by your 4th finger.

Practice saying and playing these in the following simple exercise:

The diagram to the right shows all the natural notes in Position IV which are accessed by the L.H. fingerings: 1 on IV, 2 on V, 3 on VI, and 4 on VII. To help you learn this template, the following exercises begin one string at a time and then proceed to groups of strings. For one-string exercises, the fingering "0" indicates the string is played open. For group-string exercises, no open strings are used.
Work as slow as you need, first visualizing, then playing and saying. When you feel secure, return to p.76 in the book to apply your understanding of Position IV to scales, arpeggios, and Inventions.

Identify three-note fretboard patterns as chord names. Each pattern is part of a larger 4-, 5-, or 6- string chord. The qualities choices are lead-sheet style. (Here "o7" is for all types of diminished 7th chords)
